Status Update East Coast Power Outage-12:45 PM EST

Issue 412, August 15, 2003
Dear Valued Customer:

As you know, six states in the Northeast and Midwest U.S., as well as parts of Canada, yesterday experienced a severe power outage. At this time, power is being gradually restored to the affected areas. However, operations at several airports continue to be shut down or severely curtailed, and a number of our offices remain closed due to lack of power.

As of noon EDT, August 15, our offices in Detroit, Cleveland, Port Huron and New York's JFK Airport are still closed. Our Canadian offices in Toronto and Montreal also remain closed, as well as Canadian Customs.

Incoming calls to Cleveland are being re-routed to Cincinnati, while incoming calls to Detroit are being re-routed to the World Service Center.

All flight operations at Newark, N.J., are operating business-as-usual, and we report no problems tendering or collecting cargo from carriers operating there. However, all flight operations at JFK remain shut down, and carriers are not accepting or releasing cargo for security reasons. Additionally, U.S. Customs at JFK is closed.

Limited flight operations have resumed at Toronto and Cleveland, but carriers serving both airports are not accepting or releasing cargo, again due to security concerns. In Toronto, Air Canada is not accepting any freight for at least 24 hours. The majority of the other airlines and truckers in Toronto are not accepting freight for export or import recovery for up to 24 hrs.

Ocean freight operations at Newark have been fully operational as of the early morning August 15. The port is receiving containers, and pick-ups are being executed as normal. Our Container Freight Station at Newark is fully operational at this time.

We recognize the inconvenience this incident has caused, and we are working hard to ensure that goods will move quickly through our system once power is restored. We will keep you updated as conditions change.
