Potential Port Delays

Issue 365, September 27, 2002
PMA Closes All West Coast Terminals Until Sunday Morning
LOS ANGELES - The West Coast labor situation has deteriorated over the past 24 hours. The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), representing shipping lines, closed all West Coast ports until Sunday morning in response to union slowdowns.

The Pacific Maritime Association board met Friday morning and agreed on the lockout, which was scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. EDT. The PMA is prepared to resume normal operations Sunday, and will keep the terminals open as long as the ILWU abides by prior arbitration rulings.

Wildcat Trucking Strike at the Port of Toronto
TORONTO - At the Port of Toronto, owner/operators are protesting at the Canadian National Rail and Canadian Pacific Rail delivery and receiving gates. This has seized both rail and truck movements in and out of the Ontario market. These actions are being taken due to disputes over wages for local trucking services.

Feedback from the intermodal trucking company owners would indicate that a return to work by Tuesday/Wednesday next week is probable, but not certain.

These protests have not been organized by any of the trucking associations and appear to have been initiated by a gathering group of independent owner/operators. The owner/operators have since formed an association called the Container Carrier Owner Operator Association (CCOOAT).

We are monitoring both actions very carefully and will continue to keep you informed via The Danzas AEI Resource newsletter.
