Update Regarding Fee on Beef Imports

Issue 356, July 18, 2002
In a previous issue of The Danzas AEI Resource (Issue 354, July 10, 2002), it was stated that Customs was to cease collections of the beef check off fee as of July 15, 2002, due to the fact that the fee had been deemed unconstitutional. On July 11, 2002, the U.S. Department of Agriculture notified the U.S. Customs Service that the U.S. Court of Appeals granted their request for a stay of the lower court's decision. This decision provides for the continuation of the collection of the beef check off fee assessments on cattle, beef and beef products. Therefore, Customs has been instructed to continue to collect the beef fee on cattle, beef and beef products. This will remain in effect until the appeal process is concluded. Further information will be issued by Customs pending the final decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
