Taste of Fresh-baked Bread is Final Link in a Unique Chain of International Compassion

First Shipments of Donated American Wheat Flour Distributed to Widows and Children in Kabul, Afghanistan

Washington, DC (August 2, 2002) -- Afghan widows and children today are enjoying a gift from the farmers of North Dakota: the first sacks of wheat flour transported around the world by Deutsche Post World Net and delivered courtesy of the humanitarian organization CARE.

The food distribution yesterday in Kabul, Afghanistan culminated months of effort in a public/private sector project inspired by Senator Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota) that combined the talents of the North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU), CARE, and Deutsche Post World Net.

The NDFU raised more than $150,000 to buy 1000 metric tons of wheat, which was milled and fortified for shipment to Afghanistan. Deutsche Post World Net donated the services of its logistics Business Unit, Danzas, which transported the 53-truckloads of flour from North Dakota to Karachi, Pakistan. CARE arranged to deliver the wheat to Kabul and handled the distribution. The Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives donated the costs of milling the wheat into flour.

Each widow and her family will receive about 100 pounds of flour from the shipment as well as CARE's regular ration of cooking oil, lentils and iodized salt. Additional shipments will be delivered over the next several months.

"These are families at the edge of starvation. The generosity and ingenuity of the partners in this effort will help these women and children survive, and allow children to return to school," noted Senator Conrad.

"A world-class logistics system is at its best when it is deployed to help people in desperate need," said Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of Deutsche Post World Net. "I am proud that together with Senator Conrad, the North Dakota Farmers Union, the people of North Dakota and CARE, Deutsche Post and Danzas could play a role in delivering urgently needed aid to the suffering people of Afghanistan."

The flour shipments will provide a cornerstone of nutrition for approximately 10,000 Afghanistan widows and their children for months to come.
