Ocean Containers Begin Their Global Journey; Danzas Carrying Wheat to Feed Afghan Widows and Children
First Shipments Loaded At Mill, Vessel to Set Sail For Pakistan On Mother's Day; Deutsche Post World Net, Danzas Proud to Participate in Humanitarian Effort
Once filled, the containers will be placed on trucks and shipped to Dilworth, Minnesota. From there, the containers will move by rail to the Port of Seattle and be loaded aboard the vessel "Yokohama Senator" for a scheduled Mother's Day (May 12) voyage to the Port of Karachi, Pakistan. The vessel is expected to arrive in Karachi around mid-June.
At Karachi, the international relief organization CARE will arrange the land transport to Kabul, and will be responsible for distributing flour to approximately 8,500 widows and their children who have been relocated to Kabul. All told, 53 20-foot containers will be transported to Karachi over the next five weeks, providing needy families with one year's supply of foodstuffs.
The shipments are part of a public/private sector project spearheaded by Senator Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota) and supported by the collaborative efforts of the North Dakota Farmers Union-which raised $150,000 to buy 53,000 bushels of wheat- CARE, and Deutsche Post World Net, which donated the services of its logistics Business Unit, Danzas.
"This will allow the neediest women in Afghanistan to continue to provide for the health and welfare of their families," said Lydia Marshall, chairwoman of CARE's board of directors. "The generosity, thoughtfulness and vision of the North Dakota Farmers Union and its members, along with the terrific work of Senator Conrad and the logistical efforts of Deutsche Post World Net and Danzas, will make a real difference in the lives of the Afghani people."
With the Taliban no longer in power, CARE is stepping up its relief efforts with special emphasis on the Kabul Widows Emergency Feeding Project. Under the Taliban's oppressive rule, women had little opportunity to earn a living. Many men who were their families' main breadwinners died during the Taliban regime. Today, there are an estimated 40,000 widows in Kabul alone.
"These are families at the edge of starvation. The generosity and ingenuity of the partners in this effort will help these women and children survive, and allow children to return to school," said Senator Conrad.
"A world-class logistics system is at its best when it is deployed to help people in desperate need," said Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of Deutsche Post World Net. "I am proud that together with Senator Conrad, the North Dakota Farmers Union, the people of North Dakota and CARE, Deutsche Post and Danzas could play a role in delivering urgently needed aid to the suffering people of Afghanistan."
"This has truly been a global team effort, and our members are gratified to be a part of it," said Robert Carlson, president of the Farmers Union. "I applaud Senator Conrad's leadership and compassion; our farmers, who shared their harvest with those who are less fortunate; CARE for continuing its storied tradition of service to humanity, and Deutsche Post World Net and Danzas for donating their time, expertise and resources to help save lives."
Dr. Zumwinkel and Senator Conrad officially announced the start of the project on April 17 in Washington at the launch of Deutsche Post World Net USA.
