Rohrmann Elected Chairman of Cargo Network Services; First Forwarding Executive to Run Organization
GARDEN CITY, NY (June 5, 2000) -- Guenter Rohrmann, vice chairman of
Danzas AEI and a pioneer in the integrated logistics field, has been elected
chairman of Cargo Network Services Corporation (CNS), the organization
representing the U.S. cargo interests of commercial airlines, CNS said today.
Rohrmann becomes the first freight forwarder executive to chair CNS since its
founding in 1985. CNS is the U.S. air cargo subsidiary of the International Air
Transport Association.
"This is a milestone for CNS and for the air cargo industry," said Anthony F.
Calabrese, president of CNS. "No executive that I know of is more trusted and
respected by customers, by airlines and by his peers. It is a tribute to Guenter
Rohrmann's expertise and leadership that we ask him to lead CNS during the
challenging days ahead."
"I am honored to have been chosen for this important post. I will do my best to
work through and resolve the issues most important to our members and our
customers," Rohrmann said.
Rohrmann lauded the work of Pat Phelan, vice president, cargo, Aer Lingus,
and CNS' outgoing chairman. "Pat Phelan did a superb job in guiding CNS
through a dynamic and turbulent period in its history," Rohrmann said. "Our
industry is much better off thanks to his efforts."
Rohrmann affirmed his support for CARGO 2000, the initiative launched three
years ago by carriers and freight forwarders to improve the efficiency of air
cargo operations, enhance customer service and reduce operating costs by
implementing a program of uniform business processes and automated
standards.
"I remain committed to the principles set forth by CARGO 2000 because they
are in the best interests of our customers," Rohrmann said. "Strengthening the
CARGO 2000 program, and advancing it to a successful resolution, will be a
top priority."
Rohrmann said he would work to enhance the relationships between airlines
and forwarders, and that he would sharpen the group's focus on the burgeoning
e-business opportunities for the air cargo industry.
"The speed of air transportation is tailor-made for global e-business," he said. "I
will see to it that CNS endorsed agents and subscribing carriers are out-front in
capturing mind and market share in this dynamic area."
Rohrmann joined the former Air Express International (AEI) in 1961. He rose
through the ranks to become CEO in 1989. Rohrmann led AEI through a
period of unprecedented growth in the late 1980s and most of the 1990s.
In 1998, Rohrmann received the prestigious Salzberg Medallion from Syracuse
University in recognition of lifetime achievement in advancing the cause of
transportation logistics.
Deutsche Post acquired AEI in February for $1.14 billion. The operations of
the former AEI are in the process of being integrated with those of Danzas
Intercontinental, another Deutsche Post subsidiary.
Cargo Network Services Corporation, a subsidiary of the International Air
Transport Association (IATA), was founded to serve the needs of the air cargo
industry in the United States. CNS provides a range of products and services
to promote productivity, profitability, credibility, cooperation and quality of
service among air carriers and cargo agents. In a constantly changing
landscape, CNS is committed to understanding industry dynamics so it can
anticipate the future needs of the airline-cargo agent partnership. For additional
