Danzas with substantially improved results

Strong partner of Deutsche Post World Net

Worldwide logistics provider Danzas had a successful 1999 business year. Net sales rose from EUR 3004 million to EUR 4218 million. EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) grew by 72 percent, from EUR 29 million to EUR 50 million. As part of the Deutsche Post World Net, Danzas will continue to pursue its growth strategy in the year 2000.

BASEL (Switzerland) (May 24, 2000) -- The Danzas Group again expanded market share in the fiercely contested logistics sector. In 1999 the group's net sales increased from EUR 3004 million to EUR 4218 million (+40%). Danzas grew its EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) by 72%, from EUR 29 million to EUR 50 million. At today's press conference in Basel, CEO Peter Wagner cited the tightly knit, global network of branches, the international IT network, as well as the broad range of services along the supply chain under the roof of Deutsche Post World Net as important contributors to this improved performance.

Partner in the world market
The main milestone came in March 1999 when Danzas became part of the Deutsche Post World Net group of companies. It has proven an excellent fit of two complementary partners. Under the aegis of Deutsche Post, Danzas was able to pursue its strategic goals even faster in the 1999 business year. The expansion program was marked above all by the acquisitions of the Dutch firm Nedlloyd European Transport and Distribution (ETD), Swedish transport and logistics company ASG, and the announcement of the acquisition of American air and ocean freight specialist Air Express International (AEI). These takeovers enabled Danzas to extend its worldwide network, fill in geographical gaps, and improve the group's market position in all business areas. At the same time, customers have benefited from a broader range of services and enhancement of the group's sophisticated IT applications.

Solutions: supply chain management
The focused growth of the Danzas Group was also reflected in the results reported by the Solutions Business Unit (Consumer Solutions, Industry Solutions, Specialties). Solutions boosted its net sales from EUR 455 million to EUR 823 million. A number of acquisitions and integrations (Nedlloyd ETD, DDF Logistica, Vindo Logistik, ASG Logistics, Deutsche Post Kontrakt Logistik) paved the way for strong improvement of the global market position. In this business field Danzas Solutions occupies a leading position in Europe and is one of the major providers worldwide.

Intercontinental: global player
Danzas Intercontinental expanded its business markedly in the second half of 1999. Net sales increased from EUR 1279 million to EUR 1545 million. The acquisition of Air Express International (AEI) strengthened Intercontinental as a global player: internationally, Danzas is now number 1 in air freight and among the top 5 in ocean freight.

Eurocargo: No. 1 in European land transport
Despite unabated over-capacity and pressure on rates in Europe's overland transport market, Danzas Eurocargo 1999 turned in much-improved results. Net sales rose from EUR 1270 million to EUR 1851 million. As a result of the integration of Nedlloyd ETD and ASG Road Transport, Eurocargo advanced to market leader in the field of European land transport.

Fit for the future
Among providers of logistics services, Danzas now occupies a leading position in all business areas. Danzas' goals for the current year include continued expansion, expansion of customer services and development of e-business solutions for the entire supply chain. Another major step is the planned integration of AEI into the Intercontinental Business Unit. The group's ultimate goal is to become the world's leading provider of all types of logistics services. In doing so, Danzas is orienting itself more and more closely to the requirements of the market and individual customers. It took an initial step in this direction on May 1, 2000 by combining the previously separate business units of Consumer Solutions, Industry Solutions and Specialties into a single Solutions Business Unit.

The Danzas Group now consists of three business units: Solutions, Intercontinental and Eurocargo. This simplification of the group's structure will make it easier for Danzas customers to access the worldwide range of logistics services from a single source (one-stop shopping), and at the same time opens the way to continued improvement of productivity.

Note:
The figures for the 1999 business year include the months of July-December for Nedlloyd ETD and the months of September-December for ASG. The figures for AEI will be consolidated starting in the 2000 business year.
