AEI North America Names Carol Sheldon Vice President, Import Services

DARIEN, CT USA (November 11, 1999) -- AEI, a leading provider of global integrated logistics solutions, announced today it has named Carol J. Sheldon to the key post of vice president, import services, North America. Sheldon will be based at AEI’s Northern Border headquarters in Detroit.

Sheldon, who managed AEI’s operations on the U.S. northern border, will now oversee all of AEI’s U.S. import operations, including customs brokerage and regulatory compliance. She will work closely with AEI’s transportation professionals to ensure the seamless flow of inbound consignments into the United States and Canada from worldwide origination points.

“Carol Sheldon is a seasoned professional with a proven track record. Our ability to promote such a talented individual from within is a reflection of AEI’s exceptionally deep and strong global management team,” said Giorgio Laccona, AEI’s senior vice president, the Americas.

A 24-year veteran of the import business, Sheldon joined AEI in 1996 from John V. Carr and Son Inc., a Detroit-based customs broker which was acquired by AEI that year. Her last position at Carr was vice president of operations, where she was in charge of all of Carr’s import and export operating activities.

While at AEI, Sheldon developed and executed “Border Express,” a service that has helped shorten clearance times for imported goods from Canada. She also created “Border Excellence Starts Today” (B.E.S.T.), a program designed to enhance the quality of the import-handling process on the U.S. Northern Border.

Sheldon’s appointment comes as AEI aggressively expands its service offerings to U.S. importers. On October 18, AEI announced it completed the purchase of the CMS group of companies, a leader in import consolidation and purchase order management services for major U.S importers.

Her appointment also comes amid a period of significant regulatory change for U.S. importers. As of the end of 1998, importers are now fully responsible for complying with changes in Customs regulations mandated under a 1993 law. Importers failing to comply with the new laws could be subject to fines, penalties and even seizure of their merchandise by U.S. Customs. In March, AEI launched a comprehensive program to help bring importers into compliance with the statutes.

“We have many tools at our disposal to build value for our import customers, whom AEI estimates control about 75 percent of all logistics-buying decisions in North America,” said Sheldon. “Whether importers are seeking a solution to a routine Customs matter, developing a foreign trade-zone operation, establishing a NAFTA program, or looking for the duty rates on goods from a specific country, our licensed brokers and inbound transport specialists will work together to help them plan their importing strategies.”

AEI is a diversified global logistics provider, offering customers a comprehensive package of transportation, warehousing and distribution, customs brokerage and information service solutions. In addition to providing transportation and distribution services for its customers in more than 135 countries, AEI manages the inventory and information across a customer's global supply chain, connecting suppliers, carriers, customs brokers and end-users through a seamless supply and distribution network.
